It’s quite difficult for me to evaluate this module, as my issues with in it have mainly arisen from personal extenuating circumstances. However, I’m glad to have had the opportunity to go back through my work from the drawing and making module to see where strengths and weaknesses have come through in my artwork.

For my work over the drawing and making module I focussed on elements of city life; mainly through the mediums of drawing and print. I felt that looking into the city as my artistic focus would be an interesting way to encounter Bristol as my new home, it also gave me a reason to get out and about exploring the new environment.

I think my most successful piece of work from this module is my small sketch book which stemmed from Chloe’s ‘Drawing Time’ lesson; I found it really interesting and grounding to illustrate elements of my own life, just to simply put pen to paper and draw my surroundings. Maintaining this little sketchbook also helped to vastly improve my competence when drawing; both in developing my style as well as experimenting with different illustrative styles. It was also really beneficial to look at other artists who taking inspiration directly from their surroundings; three major artists who influenced my work through this module were Laura McCafferty, Patrick Caulfield and Lucinda Rogers - who I have looked at in more depth in my artist studies. A further success of my project were my relief prints, using recycled polystyrene, of my halls of residence; these were developed from the aforementioned small sketch book of drawing life.

A class I really enjoyed was the ‘Drawing Space’ practical with Chloe, it was my first time working with others to make a sculpture type thing then drawing the space we had created. I took a lot away from this session, because it really tested my patience trying to draw the structure when it was so busy and ‘free formed’; however it taught me to keep trying, and not to give up of making something, even if it doesn’t seem to work at first, because it’s all about the process of creating rather than the completed parts.

There’s a lot I was able to take away from this module, I’m especially pleased with the improvement in my drawing, in the next module I plan on using photography, paint and print more to develop my work; as well as trying out new processes and hopefully learning how to combine artistic processes into actualised pieces.
