Drawing - Chairs and Negative Space

I enjoyed this drawing exercise, Chloe got us to focus on the basics of drawing and gave us tasks to complete to challenge the ways we observe an object. My First drawing is looking solely at the shapes made from negative space, this was also without looking at the page which is an exercise I struggle with but enjoy the outcomes. It is also a good practice because it forces me to focus more on the actual shapes of an object rather than those that seem more logical.

My second drawing was a timed sketch using felt tip, Chloe gave us 5mins for this drawing which made me focus more on the core form of the chairs and their placement in relation to each other rather than on details. This process is then repeated in my third drawing, but with the extra upside down layer in a different colour. I especially like the outcome of this drawing because of its textured and abstract feel and I’d like to try this method again in the future.

For the next image we spent around 45mins drawing the chairs then edited our sketches with black ink to bring out the areas of negative space, I enjoyed this exercise as it helped me see where my perspective changed while I was drawing. It was also interesting to see how a drawing can change the more you work into it. My final drawing is also spending 45min drawing then lightly bringing areas of negative space in using ink.
