Bernd + Hilla Becher

Bernd and Hilla Becher were German conceptual artists and photographers working as a collaborative duo. They're best known for their expansive series of photographic images and typographies of industrial buildings and structures. Together they photographed features of industrialisation; they did this in a very formal way that defined a style, and made them a dominant influencer of european contemporary photography and art.

I find the Becher's work very visually interesting; this is especially due to the ominous feeling brought on by their photographs. I feel that this is in someway intentional due to their photographing on clearly overcast and darker days; however I feel that this only enforces the industrial nature of the images giving an underlying sense of bleakness and melancholia. Bernd and Hilla's photographs are especially eye-catching, due the intricacies of the lines within the frame's as well as the simple documentation of the structures giving off a sense of imposing size and history.

However what stood out to me most about Bernd and Hilla Becher's artwork was their presentation using their photographs to make a grid. It makes their work look so strong and complete; and photograph wouldn't be enough to stand alone but paired as they are in the grid ties each part together. I'd like to do something similar using this grid presentation technique.
